This vintage prabhavali from Andhra Pradesh is a sculptural devotional surround traditionally used to frame and elevate the presence of a deity. Dating to over six decades ago, the piece features a prominent Kirtimukha at the centre, surrounded by layered arches and a rhythmic arrangement of flame-like motifs rising across the upper arc.

In Indian temple and devotional traditions, the prabhavali functions as a halo-like frame representing divine radiance and sanctity. More than an ornamental surround, it creates a visual transition between the earthly and the divine while directing attention towards the deity at its centre.

The Kirtimukha, or “Face of Glory,” is a recurring motif in Indian temple architecture and is associated with protection and the warding off of negative forces. The combination of the Kirtimukha, flame motifs and arched forms gives this Andhra Pradesh example a strong architectural character rooted in South Indian devotional traditions.

The surface has developed a natural patina over more than six decades, retaining the tonal variation and signs of age associated with an older devotional object. The prabhavali has been mounted on a wooden base for stability and display, allowing it to be presented independently as a sculptural collectible within a curated interior or collection.

Care instructions: Wipe the piece with a soft, dry cloth. Do not expose it to direct sunlight, dampness, heat or cold.

The Blue Trunk was born out of the passion to travel, and collect pieces that symbolise the rich cultural traditions and history of places travelled to. They scour towns and villages, big and small, across India’s vast landscape, to bring forth an exquisite curation of traditional and authentic products that are part of the lives they discover. Their penchant for hand crafted artifacts, both vintage and new, is what makes their collection such a fine mix.
