Jamnalal Kumhar
Jamnalal Kumhar is a master sculptor from Molela in Rajasthan, known for its rich pottery heritage. Mud from the Beas river, dawrigund gum from local trees, donkey dung to bind the clay and local jala to varnish the finished piece: all go in to making the traditional votives from coils of 1.5” thick mud ‘ropes' that are kneaded into shape. While they typically depicted gods, goddesses, animals and symbols, Jamnalal can create anything to a brief, through 2D sculptures, broken into square tiles. Collaborating and teaching across the world, Jamnalal is committed to preserving his traditional craft, and expanding its boundaries in more ways than one.
