This elegant vintage rose water ewer from Gujarat is a finely crafted traditional vessel, distinguished by its slender form, balanced proportions and detailed central body. Dating to over 60 years ago, the ewer reflects the refined metalworking traditions associated with ceremonial and domestic vessels in India.
The central section, designed to hold rose water, features four distinct faces, each decorated with a flattened circular motif. The elongated neck and carefully shaped spout give the ewer its characteristic silhouette, while the ornamental detailing adds to its sculptural quality.
Rose water ewers have historically been used across the Indian subcontinent in ceremonial, religious and hospitality contexts. Rose water has long been associated with purification, auspiciousness and fragrance, and such vessels could be used to sprinkle or pour scented water during religious and social occasions.
The form of Indian rose water vessels also reflects the wider exchange of artistic traditions across the subcontinent, including influences from Persianate metalwork. Over time, these functional vessels developed into highly decorative objects valued for their craftsmanship as much as their practical use.
This example has survived for over six decades with its distinctive form and decorative detailing intact. Its tall, elegant profile and unusual four-faced central body make it a striking example of vintage Indian metalwork and a collectible object for those interested in traditional vessels, ceremonial objects and Gujarati craftsmanship.
