This vintage Prabhavali from Gujarat, over 90 years old, is a distinctive example of traditional Indian sacred metalwork. Its upper section is formed by a rhythmic series of sculpted jwalas, or flames, whose flowing shapes take on an almost floral quality, creating movement across the entire aureole.

At the centre is a prominent Kirtimukha, the protective face motif widely seen in Indian temple architecture and sacred art. Elegant decorative arches frame the central section and create a measured architectural rhythm, balancing the movement of the surrounding flames.

A Prabhavali traditionally forms a halo or ornamental aureole around an image of a deity, emphasising its sacred presence. Across India, Prabhavalis developed in varied regional styles, incorporating motifs such as flames, arches and protective figures. Their forms reflect the architectural and decorative traditions of the regions in which they were made.

This Prabhavali is now presented on a stand, allowing it to be displayed independently as a piece of traditional Indian sacred art. Its combination of flowing flame motifs, central Kirtimukha and architectural arches makes it an engaging collectible for those interested in Indian temple art, devotional objects and historic metal craftsmanship.

Care instructions: Wipe the piece with a soft, dry cloth. Do not expose it to direct sunlight, dampness, heat or cold.

The Blue Trunk was born out of the passion to travel, and collect pieces that symbolise the rich cultural traditions and history of places travelled to. They scour towns and villages, big and small, across India’s vast landscape, to bring forth an exquisite curation of traditional and authentic products that are part of the lives they discover. Their penchant for hand crafted artifacts, both vintage and new, is what makes their collection such a fine mix.
