Jagrity Phukan is a textile artist who collaborates with farmers, weavers and dyers in Northeast India, to make handmade creations celebrating living traditions.
Peek-A-Boo celebrates the intertwined relationship between women and nature, and is
inspired by an Assamese folk rhyme that goes “Hur hur bota sorai, Mur dhan nakhabi tuk dim guta korai". In it, Champawati watches over the paddy field, shooing away the birds, saying: “Fly away, little birds, take flight; don’t feast upon my paddy bright. For I will cook a treat so nice – fried puffed rice, a tempting slice."
To the artist, this scene is akin to a little girl playing peek-a-boo with the birds, and enjoying the sound of the wind and the birds as she rests under the shade of the bamboo.
