An antique red sanders wood Marapachi figure of Bharata from the Ramayana, from Andhra Pradesh, framed against deep red raw silk. Carved in the dense, naturally reddish wood traditionally used for South Indian wooden figures, this figure represents Bharata, the younger brother of Lord Rama, remembered for his loyalty, humility and adherence to dharma.
Bharata is best known for refusing to take Rama's throne during his fourteen-year exile. Instead, he placed Rama's sandals on the throne of Ayodhya and ruled only as his brother's representative, making him a powerful symbol of devotion, duty and the renunciation of personal power.
The figure belongs to the broader Marapachi wooden figure tradition of South India. Its red sanders wood, Andhra Pradesh provenance and relatively uncommon depiction of Bharata make it an interesting example of antique Indian wooden sculpture, Ramayana art and traditional South Indian craftsmanship.
