On 26 January 1950, the Constitution of India came into force, and India became a republic. From 26 January 2026, we step into the 77th year of this journey. It is a moment worth pausing for. The Constitution holds together the idea of India; diverse yet united, guided by liberty, equality, justice, and fraternity.

The handmade and craft sector reflects this idea in a very real way. Across the country, in every region and community, artisans continue to create with freedom and identity. This has led to an incredible range of forms, materials, and expressions. Nearly 200 million artisans are part of this sector. They come from different backgrounds, yet share a sense of dignity, respect, and purpose. In many ways, this sector mirrors the spirit of the Constitution.

Hamari Virasat is a small step towards bringing this connection into view. These works have been contributed by members of Hand for Handmade foundation from across India. Each piece draws inspiration from the visual language of the Preamble to the Constitution of India.
