This vintage embroidered yoke panel from the Kutch region of Gujarat was once part of a traditional woman’s garment. Worked on cotton, it features repeating geometric motifs stitched in vivid threads, reflecting the region’s distinctive textile traditions and the precision of its hand embroidery.

Small mirrors, known locally as abhla, are embedded throughout the design. Some remain in place and catch the light, while others are missing, leaving faint outlines in the fabric. These traces of wear are part of the textile’s history, revealing its age and former use as a fragment of traditional dress. The repeated motifs create a measured rhythm across the surface, balancing geometric order with the variations of handmade work. Mounted against a white background with a minimal border, the embroidered panel is presented as a piece of textile art, allowing the stitches, colours and surviving mirror work to remain the focus.

Today, this framed textile offers a way to appreciate Kutch’s embroidery heritage beyond the garment itself. It is suited to a collection of Indian textiles, folk art or cultural artefacts, as well as interiors that bring traditional craftsmanship into a contemporary setting.

Care instructions: Wipe the piece with a soft, dry cloth. Do not expose it to direct sunlight, dampness, heat or cold.

The Blue Trunk was born out of the passion to travel, and collect pieces that symbolise the rich cultural traditions and history of places travelled to. They scour towns and villages, big and small, across India’s vast landscape, to bring forth an exquisite curation of traditional and authentic products that are part of the lives they discover. Their penchant for hand crafted artifacts, both vintage and new, is what makes their collection such a fine mix.
