A vintage Raja Ravi Varma oleograph titled Makarandeya, depicting one of the most dramatic episodes in Hindu mythology: Lord Shiva protecting the young sage Markandeya from Yama, the god of death.

The composition captures the moment of divine intervention. The youthful Markandeya is shown seeking refuge in Shiva, while Yama, the deity who presides over death, approaches with his noose. Shiva appears as the powerful protector, intervening at the moment when Markandeya's destined death is challenged. The tension between the figures gives the image a strong narrative quality, characteristic of Ravi Varma's approach to mythological subjects.
