An antique wooden architectural panel from Karnataka, featuring a central Kalasha flanked by a pair of Hamsa (sacred swans) rendered in white against a sea-green ground. The composition is enriched with intricately carved floral and foliate ornament that radiates outward from the central vessel, creating a balanced and highly decorative architectural motif.

Panels of this type formed part of the decorative vocabulary of traditional South Indian architecture, where carved wooden elements were incorporated into doorways, interior halls, and ceremonial spaces. Beyond their ornamental function, such carvings often carried symbolic meanings associated with prosperity, protection, and spiritual well-being.

At the centre of the composition is the Kalasha, one of the most auspicious symbols in Indian art and architecture. Traditionally represented as a sacred vessel filled with life-giving water, the Kalasha signifies abundance, fertility, prosperity, and divine presence. In architectural settings, it is frequently employed as a symbol of fullness and auspicious beginnings.

Flanking the vessel are two Hamsa, among the most revered birds in Indian artistic traditions. Associated with wisdom, purity, and spiritual discernment, the Hamsa occupies an important place in Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain iconography. Classical Indian literature attributes to the bird the ability to separate milk from water, making it a metaphor for the capacity to distinguish truth from illusion and the essential from the superficial. The pairing of Hamsa with the Kalasha creates a composition that combines ideas of abundance with wisdom and spiritual refinement.

The elaborate floral ornament connecting these motifs reflects a long-standing artistic convention in Indian architectural carving, where scrolling foliage serves as a visual expression of growth, continuity, and the regenerative forces of nature.
