Ramesh Hengadi comes from Maharashtra’s Warli tribe and has been painting in the
Warli style since childhood. Warli life has a deep connection with nature and the earth,
and the art is inspired by their natural surroundings and their lives as agriculturists.
Nature’s Dispossession engages with the environmental challenges that result from
development and encroachment. The earth, depicted in two concentric circles, seems to
float in a universe filled with stars. In the centre, tiny human figures portray a busy
harvest scene, where the symmetry suggests a balance between nature and mankind.
Surrounding this inner circle however, is a band of buildings, factories, cars, airplanes,
a few trees: a bare earth, where natural life and human activity are minimised.
