Coming from a 700 year old line of Phad artists, Kalyan Joshi has helped evolve the art form, and is a leading force in ensuring its preservation.
Gateway Of India depicts Mumbai’s most iconic monument as a triptych, in the traditional Phad style. It incorporates classical Phad motifs like jhaali, jharokha and borders, and renders key elements like the ocean, fish, lotuses and plants, entirely in Phad style. This work is the artist’s ode to the ‘maximum city’ that opens its arms to people from everywhere, both providing for them and enriching itself through them,
just as the ocean accepts fish from diverse places, sustaining them and growing with them.
