From ancient medicine cabinets and burial wreaths to more potent intoxicants, the poppy flower has played a crucial part in shaping history. Poppy Slumber draws parallels between the ‘hollow’ sleep induced by opium and the ‘hollow morals’ of the imperialists who profited from it. The opium trade brought them enormous wealth while ravaging entire nations, but their misdeeds were whitewashed, as the ‘flower of forgetting’ became the ‘flower of remembrance’. The work is also a comment on the deep sleep
our world is in, as we expect former colonizers to find solutions to the very wars they profit from. Floral pillows are offered at funerals; this pillow here, for all the mindless deaths at the funeral of morality, throughout history.
