Tahir Sultan is a versatile designer whose work stretches across product design, interiors, fashion, art installations, food and women’s empowerment.
The Purveyor of Wisdom, Courage and Strength is an amalgamation of mythical creatures from seemingly banal objects across timelines and cultures in India. The chair depicts flawed modernism (that introduced concrete), the tribal Naga milk pots, basket and raincoat, traditional harvest tools, the spine from plastic, the bane and backbone of consumerism. The brass pail holding water, life’s essence: a container? or a womb? The bird calls to the warrior in us all to soar, and defend that which we believe in. The elephants ask us to tap into our inner strength and wisdom, to stand our ground for us and those around us. Everything is transient, says the artist, so let the mark you make be kindness; hold a pebble in your hand, make a wish and throw it into the womb of possibilities. Everything is born from desire; what it is you desire?
